Home brewers set to raise funds for the SPCA this weekend
ALES For Tails is a much-anticipated fundraising festival that benefits the Kloof and Highway SPCA.
As International Beer Day is celebrated this week on August 5, there is no better event to showcase one of the oldest drinks in the world.
Ales for Tails is a home-brew and spirit festival due to be held on Saturday at the Kloof and Highway SPCA grounds, where over 30 home brewers will make their beers and spirit mixers available for the public to taste.
One such home brewer is Adrian Ryley who will be donating batches of hazelnut brown ale, Silky Stout and Oh So Easy pale ale. Ryley started brewing nine years ago after attending a workshop for beginner brewers. Shortly after taking up his new hobby, he won a national brewing competition with the prize of a sponsored German trip. Ryley visited commercial breweries, hops farms and malting factories in Europe, and by the end of the holiday, he knew he had discovered a life-long love for beer and its manufacturing process.
Ryley was one of the first members of Durban Home Brewers. When asked if it is a difficult process to create a beer, he says that if you can make tea, then you can produce an enjoyable beer. He says the home brewers get ‘really experimental for the day’, adding anything from granadillas, to vanilla pods and coffee to their brews.
“One of the best things about Ales for Tails is that the home brewers themselves will be serving their beers to the public on Saturday and will be available to answer questions,” says Ryley.
Ryley is a brewer who is passionate about his craft. Look out for him on the day and taste from one of his three donated batches of beer and raise funds for a good cause.
Fundraising has never been tastier.
Live music and street-food stalls in a family and pet-friendly environment will be on offer for beer enthusiasts.
This is the first time the event is being held since the Covid pandemic.
