Durban North centenarian celebrates milestone birthday

DORCAS Evans of Mildene Park in Durban North turned 100 years old last week. She celebrated her milestone birthday with family at the Oyster Box Hotel.

Evans was born on September 3, 1922 in Durban.

“I grew up in the Durban North area. World War II broke out on my 17th birthday, and it was during the war that I met my husband, Bill. He was in the British Navy, and his ship was docked in Durban for repairs. We were at a dance when we met,” reminisces Evans.

Three weeks later, Bill had to leave, but before he left, he proposed to her at Athlone Gardens which is now called Riverside Hotel.

“We didn’t see each other for two years, and once the war was over, I travelled by myself by ship to England. We got married two years later,” she said.

They lived in England for seven years but then decided to return to Durban where she has lived ever since.
“We had a very happy marriage of over 50 years and have two sons, Dave and Richard,” she added.

Evans also has four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
