Grow the Malacca Road community for Mandela Day
AS part of their Mandela Day initiative, #PlantAgainstPoverty, The Seed Fund (SF), is collecting planter boxes, compost, vegetable seedlings and packets of vegetable seeds to donate to residents of the Malacca Road Informal Settlement.
Most of the homes in the lower section of the settlement were destroyed after a fire broke out last month.
SF, a Durban North based NPO, is calling on the community to deliver their donations to the settlement on Saturday, 18 July between 10am and 2pm.
Donors are also invited to plant the seedlings in the planter box and deliver the finished product or consider a donation of R67 if they are unable to purchase plants.
SF project coordinator, Jessica Pretorius said the initiative aims to empower the community to grow their own vegetables.
“We believe this initiative will empower individuals and be a step toward alleviating poverty in their lives. Each person is their own asset and by giving them the opportunity to build and expand on their capabilities, the prospect of a more fulfilled future starts to arise,” she added.
